Place Des Quinconces, Bordeaux

Sprawling over 12 hectares, the Place des Quinconces is one of the largest squares in Europe.

Sprawling over 12 hectares, the Place des Quinconces is one of the largest squares in Europe. Laid out in 1820, it has trees planted in a quincunx pattern from which it derives its name.

The two 21 metre high Neo-Classical columns on the banks of Garonne symbolize Trade and Navigation. At the other end is the imposing Monument to the Girondins, which commemorates the Girondists who died during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution. It has a 43 metre high column topped by a statue of Liberty, flanked by 2 pools with a bronze sculptural ensemble of troops and horses at the base. The square hosts fairs, circuses, sporting events and exhibitions throughout the year.
