Bordeaux Cathedral, Bordeaux

The largest religious building in Bordeaux, the Cathédrale Saint-André is a Roman Catholic cathedral that is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The largest religious building in Bordeaux, the Cathédrale Saint-André is a Roman Catholic cathedral that is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. The current Angevine Gothic building was built in the 12th– 16thcenturies, though the Cathedral was consecrated much earlier in 1096. The main façade to the north has bas-reliefs of the Last Supper, the Ascension and the Triumph of the Redeemer. It is flanked by 81 metre high twin towers. The interiors are simple, but contain artifacts of historical importance such as the medieval Marcadé collection of illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, liturgical vestments and silver objects.

Next to the Cathedral is the flamboyant Gothic belfry Tour Pey-Berland with the great 11 tonne Ferdinand-André bell. You can climb the 230 steps to the observation deck on top (50 metres) for great views of the area.
