The Aquitaine Museum explores the history of the Bordeaux region and Aquitaine from pre-historic times to the present day, through a chronologically arranged collection of archaeological, historical, ethnographic and cultural artifacts. From prehistoric flints and proto-historic iron tools to Antiquity art, Romano-Gallic coins, medieval religious artifacts, 18th century slave trading ships, and modern photographs, the objects on display present a holistic overview of the area. Highlights include ✓the limestone Laussel Venus from 25000 BC, ✓marble Altar of Tutela and statue of Jupiter (Mézin) from the 1st century AD, ✓bronze statue of Hercules from the 2nd century, ✓limestone figure of a knight of Curton from the 13th century, ✓15th century stained-glass window with the arms of Bordeaux taken from the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Rose in the Basilica of Saint-Seurin, ✓author and philosopher Michel de Montaigne's tomb from 1593, ✓17th century marble bust of Cardinal Escoubleau de Sourdis by Lorenzo Bernini, ✓1/36th scale model of the 18th century Conquérant ship that served the French Navy, ✓19th century Vanuatu mask, and ✓econstruction of an early 20th century grocer's shop with products made in Bordeaux.
