Tracing its origins back to the 5thcentury, the Basilica of Sant'Abbondio is a Romanesque church built almost 1 kilometre outside the Como's city walls to house relics of Saints Peter and Paul which Saint Amantius had brought from Rome.
Tracing its origins back to the 5thcentury, the Basilica of Sant'Abbondio is a Romanesque church built almost 1 kilometre outside the Como's city walls to house relics of Saints Peter and Paul which Saint Amantius had brought from Rome. The present Romanesque structure, dedicated to Amantius' successor and Como's patron saint Abundius, was built by the Benedictines in the 11thcentury. It is noted for its bell towers, 14thcentury frescoes in the apse, and Romanesque bas-reliefs.
