Built on a 430 metre high hill in the Spina Verde Park overlooking Como, the Castello Baradello is an imposing military fortification from the Middle Ages. A fortification has existed here since ancient times, as is evident from the Roman coins found here. Built on the site of Comum Oppidum which was the original settlement of Como in the 1st millennium BC, the castle was the last Byzantine stronghold in the area. The 27.5 metre high Romanesque square tower from the 12thcentury was restored by Emperor Barbarossa during the War of Lombard League against the Roman Empire, while the original walls are from the 6th– 7thcentury, with a third set of walls added in the Viscontis Age (14th– 15thcentury).
The castle is 3 kilometres away from the heart of Como, and be reached by foot walking along Via Milano. It is open in summer, and there are guided tours on weekends. There is also a small museum inside.
