Dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Como Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Como.
Dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Como Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Como. Built on the site of a previous Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, the church was constructed over 4 centuries starting in 1396 and therefore presents different architectural styles from different stages. The Gothic marble façade and naves are from the 15th century, the presbytery, choir and side apses were built in the 16thcentury and the Rococo cupola by Filippo Juvarra over the Renaissance transept was completed in the 17thcentury. Abutting the Broletto, the tripartite west façade features a large circular rose window, and a portal flanked by statues of Como natives Plinio il Vecchio (Pliny the Elder) and Plinio il Giovane (Pliny the Younger) by sculptor Tommaso Rodari of Moriggia. The interiors have notable works of art, including 16thcentury tapestries, 19thcentury stained glass windows by Bertini, and paintings by Gauedenzio Ferrari, Bernardino Luini, and Morazzone.
