Basilica San Nicola, Bari

The Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari is an important pilgrimage site for East European Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians.

The Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari is an important pilgrimage site for East European Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians. One of the earliest Norman churches in southern Italy, it was built in 1089-1197 in Romanesque style. Dedicated to Saint Nicolas of Myra or Father Christmas whose legend inspired the creation of Santa Claus, the Basilica's crypt houses his relics which were stolen from Turkey in 1087. The relics exude miraculous myrrh which is collected in a flask on Saint Nicholas Day (December 6) and distributed all over the world.

The church has several remarkable architectural features and works of art, including the Lion's Portal in the north, an 11thcentury cathedra made for Elias, 12th century candlesticks donated by King Charles I of Anjou, the Renaissance style marble tomb of Bona Sforza, the mosaics on the ciborum, triptych by Andrea Rico, and the gilded wooden ceiling.
