Bari Cathedral, Bari

Overshadowed by the adjacent Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Bari Cathedral is still important as the seat of the Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto.

Overshadowed by the adjacent Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Bari Cathedral is still important as the seat of the Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto. Originally built in 1062 in Byzantine style, it is dedicated to Bishop of Canosa Saint Sabinus, whose relics were brought to Bari in the 9th century by Saint Angelarius.

The present Apulian Romanesque building is from the 12th– 13thcentury, with a simple façade divided into 3 by pilasters. Above the central portal are a mullioned double lancet window, and the rose window framed by a lintel carved with monsters and fantastic beasts. The east wall has a remarkable apsidal window with sculptures, while the ends of the transept have mullioned windows transepts. To the side of the building is the Trulla (sacristy, which was used as the baptistery in the 12th century), while the campanile with its lantern-tower stands behind. Inside, the cathedral has 3 aisles of sixteen columns, leading to a high altar with a ciborium and pulpit reconstructed from original material. The main altar's crypt has the relics of Saint Sabinus, and icon of the Madonna Odegitria. The smaller apses have the relics of Saint Columba and others.

The adjacent building of the Curia houses the Diocesan Museum which showcases liturgical artifacts, including the Exultet scroll, a Byzantine manuscript written in Beneventine writing used in southern Italy.
