Across the road from the old port of Bari, overlooking the Augusto Imperatore waterfront is the busy square of Piazza Ferrarese. It is named after Stefano Fabri, a merchant from Ferrara who owned several buildings on the square in the 17thcentury, though the area has been important since long before, as traces of the Via Appia-Traiana built by Romans in the 2nd century have been discovered here. Connected to the Mercantile Piazza, the piazza is lined with bars, cafes and restaurants. It has the Ex mercato del pesce or former fish market from 1840, Sala Murat, Starita Palace, and Vallisa Church. It hosts concerts, and art performances.
