Piazza Mercantile is the historical commercial and administrative heart of Bari, laid out in the 14thcentury next to the port. A popular meeting spot for locals and tourists, it has several restaurants, cafes and clubs. Highlights of the square are -

  • Palazzo Sedile – headquarters of the Council of Nobles, with a 16th century clock tower.
  • Palazzo della Dogana – built by the Duchess Isabella Sforza of Aragon, it has a coat of arms affixed on the façade.
  • Fontana Barocca or Fontana della Pigna – monolithic marble basin.
  • Colonna della Giustizia or Colonna Infame - white marble column topped by a cannon ball, with an Apulian limestone lion at its foot. This is where insolvent debtors were once tied and whipped.
  • Casa di Niccolo Piccinni – where the famed composer Piccinni was born. It houses an exhibition dedicated to him.
