Standing tall on Mount Tre Croci in San Maurizio, the Volta Lighthouse (Faro Voltiano) is a 29 metre high octagonal tower built (along with Tempio Voltiano) in 1927 to commemorate the centenary of renowned physicist and Como native Alessandro Volta's death. Designed by engineer Gabriele Giussani, it has an internal spiral staircase of 143 steps that lead to 2 circular balconies - one above the main entrance, and the other just outside the lantern which alternately emits a green, white and red light. You can get great views of the Alps all the way to Monte Rosa from here. The central vault of the lighthouse has a commemorative plaque and bust of a geriatric Volta. The terrace at the base offers good views over the lake.
To reach here, take the Funicular from Como to Brunate, and hike up a kilometre to the lighthouse.
