The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin is the largest Bulgarian Orthodox church in Varna, and the second largest in Bulgaria.
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin is the largest Bulgarian Orthodox church in Varna, and the second largest in Bulgaria. It is the seat of the bishopric of Varna and Preslav. It was built in 1880-'86 to a layout planned by Vasily Maas, and rest of the architecture by Kupka, inspired by the temple of the Peterhof Palace in St Petersburg. The façade is made of stone from the nearby villages of Kumanovo and Lyuben Karavelovo, surmounted by onion-shaped gilded copper domes. The 38 metre high bell tower was built in 1941-'43, and has a spiral flight of 133 steps that lead to the top where you can get magnificent views over Varna. The interiors have 3 naves, with the main altar dedicated to the Holy Assumption, the northern one to St. Alexander Nevski, and the southern to St. Nicholas. Highlights of the Cathedral are the finely carved iconostasis by Ivan Filipov, icons gifted by Tsar Nicholas II, Bishop's throne by Niko Mavrodi, narthex murals and stained glass.
