Located on the banks of the Lee River, the Blackrock Castle was developed as a coastal defense frontier in the 16th century to protect upper Cork Harbour and port. Presently, it houses an observatory with an astronomical centre, and a radio telescope that beams messages out to stars. Frequent events are held in the observatory for the promotion of science and technology.
