Located on the banks of the Lee River, the Blackrock Castle was developed as a coastal defense frontier in the 16th century to protect upper Cork Harbour and port. Presently, it houses an observatory with an astronomical centre, and a radio telescope that beams messages out to stars. Frequent events are held in the observatory for the promotion of science and technology. Besides enjoying the different activities in the historical setting, you can get spellbinding views at twilight of the castle against the backdrop of the Lee, and enjoy a meal at the Castle Cafe.
