When the English Market was started in 1788 as a meat market, few could have imagined its popularity 200 years down the line. Maintained by the City Council of Cork, it is one of the oldest municipal markets in the world. It comprises the Princes Street Market and Grand Parade Market, with booths selling fresh produce, meat, fish, cheeses, pastas, cured meats, oils, sauces, sausages, sushi, chocolates, cakes, herbs and spices. The Farmgate Restaurant in the Princes Street Market showcases traditional dishes made from local produce sold at the market. You can also pick up crockery, clothes, and novelty items at some of the stalls.
