Also known as the Santa Maria dell'Elemosina, the Basilica della Collegiata in Catania is the epitome of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Built in the early 18th century, it was designed by Angelo Italia, with a façade by Stefano Ittar. The curved 2 storey façade features 6 Corinthian stone columns flanking 3 portals, above which is a balustrade. The second level has the statues of St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Agatha and St. Apollonia at the corners, around a large central window. It is topped by bells over which is the finial cross. The interiors feature an icon of the Virgin with Child on the high altar, and a marble statue of the Madonna on the Immaculate altar. The vaults and the dome have frescoes of scenes from the life of Mary, Angels and Saints as well as the ancient Maria Santissima dell'Elemosina by Giuseppe Sciuti.
