Casco Antiguo or Ciutat Vella is the historic heart and soul of Valencia.

Casco Antiguo or Ciutat Vella is the historic heart and soul of Valencia. The charming medieval neighborhood has beautiful plazas surrounded by classical buildings, old churches, bustling markets, and other cultural attractions. Founded by the Romans in 138 BC, the area has relics from that era as well as the subsequent Arab and medieval Christian periods.

The Plaza de la Reina is one of the largest and most important squares in the area, skirting the pedestrian Plaza de la Virgen. Around this area are the Valencia Cathedral, Generalitat Valenciana, Basilica of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, and Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the other major square, where you can find the City Hall and the central post office.

Other highlights of the Old Town are –

  • Serranos Towers - one of the 12 gates in the 14th century Christian walls
  • La Lonja - the historical Silk Exchange
  • Palacio Marqués de Dos Aguas – Rococo palace that houses the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts
  • Corts Valencianes in the Benicarló Palace
  • Palacio Marqués de la Scala from the 16th century, known for its mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles
  • Palacio de Baylia from the 19th century, which is the seat of the Regional Council
  • Almoina Archaeological Centre
  • Almudín – granary from the 15th – 16th century
  • Mercado Central – Spain's largest fresh produce market.
