Napier Prison, Napier

Established in 1862, the Napier Prison was New Zealand's oldest penal complex which remained operational till 1993.

Established in 1862, the Napier Prison was New Zealand's oldest penal complex which remained operational till 1993. It was also used as an insane asylum and orphanage. The historic facility is today open to guided day and night tours, and self-guided audio tours in 16 languages all day. Explore the premises to learn about the workings of the prison and lives of the inmates, 4 of whom were also hanged on the gallows in the Hanging Yard. You can also meet Basil the resident cat, view the solitary confinement room, and the murals and drawings by prisoners. The Napier Prison is also the only building where it is possible to see the original path of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Visitors can get their mugshots and fingerprints taken in true jailhouse style.

The complex is believed to be haunted, with spirits roaming freely around the gloomy cells and dark corridors. Supernatural phenomena such as the sound of unexplained footsteps, disembodied faces, and doors moving on their own have been reported.
