After the devastation caused by earthquake and subsequent fires in February 1931, Downtown Napier was rebuilt in the safe, streamlined, and economical Art Deco style which was very popular at the time. The Art Deco Capital of the World has 147 Art Deco buildings, which is one of the largest collections outside Miami. The Art Deco Trust promotes Napier's architectural heritage, and organizes guided walks, bus tours, and vintage car tours to introduce visitors to the remarkably well-preserved buildings decorated in various styles that include Egyptian, Mayan and Maori. The Art Deco Weekend on the 3rd weekend of February features street parades, vintage vehicles and planes, jazz concerts, and good food and wine.
