The War Memorial (Monumento ai caduti) in Como was built in 1931 – '33 by the National Fascist Party to commemorate the fallen soldiers of World War I. Overlooking Lake Como and the public gardens, the 33 metre tall monument was designed by Giuseppe and Attilio Terragni based on a sketch by Italian futurist Antonio Sant'Elia. Made of Serizzo granite and Nabresina marble, the lake-front façade has a plaque with the words 'La città esalta con le pietre del Carso la gloria dei suoi figli 1915-1918' (The city celebrates the glory of its children with Carso stone), while the plaque behind reads 'Stanotte si dorme a Trieste o in paradiso con gli eroi' (Tonight you sleep in Trieste or paradise with heroes). It features a 40 tonne granite monolith inscribed with the names of the 650 natives of Como who died during the war.
