Dano-Norwegian Lutheran missionary and 'Apostle of Greenland' Hans Egede founded Nuuk in 1728. The yellow stone house with green picket fence which he built the same year is the oldest extant house in the country, and was also used as the residence of the Prime Minister. Today it is used for official government receptions. The quaint house is a tourist landmark, and has a vegetable garden.
