One of the first museums in Greenland, the Greenland National Museum explores the history of the country over the past 4500 years, from the first Arctic Stone Age Cultures through the Norse settlements, arrival of the Thule culture, and modern day Inuits.

One of the first museums in Greenland, the Greenland National Museum explores the history of the country over the past 4500 years, from the first Arctic Stone Age Cultures through the Norse settlements, arrival of the Thule culture, and modern day Inuits. It is housed in an extended warehouse from 1936 at the old colonial harbour. The impressive collection of exhibits includes the Qilakitsoq mummies of 3 women and an infant, a 3.8 billion year old ophiolite from Akilia which is the oldest rock in the world, old kayaks and skin boats, dog sledges, amulets, fur costumes, kammiks (boots), and other artefacts related to archaeology, history, art, and handicrafts. It also has a display on social change in the 1950s. Nearby buildings such as the restocked cooper's workshop, bakery, and store are also part of the museum.

During summer (1-June to 15-September), the museum is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is DKK 30, and free for children under 16 years. Entry is free for all on Sundays.

During the rest of the year, the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm. Entry is free.
