Stone Forest, Varna

The Bulgarian name for the Stone Forest is ‘Pobiti Kamani’, which translates to 'stones beaten into the ground'.

The Bulgarian name for the Stone Forest is ‘Pobiti Kamani’, which translates to 'stones beaten into the ground'. It is located 18 kilometres from Varna on the route to Sofia, around the villages of Banovo, Strashimirovo and Devnya. Spread over 13 square kilometres, the Stone Forest features numerous limestone and sand formations of varying dimensions, which are a result of natural phenomena. The formations are mostly 5 – 7 metre tall stone columns, which range in thickness from 0.3 to 3 metres. Over the years, scientists have developed several hypotheses behind the possible occurrence of these pillars, but have still not been able to come up with something conclusive. These rocks are divided into groups, depending on their directions, with the most popular ones being the ‘Center - South’ group.
