Located near the Black Sea coast 17 kilometres to the north of Varna, Aladzha Monastery is a medieval Orthodox Christian cave monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It lies in a protected forest area near the Golden Sands Natural Park. Established in the 12th – 13th century, the monastery was abandoned in the late 15th to early 16th century, and was rediscovered only around the late 19th century by Bulgarian archeologists who became interested in the secluded Christian monument. The 40 metre high limestone caves have 2 levels of rock-hewn chambers - a lower level of monastic cells, monastery church, kitchen and refectory, and a second level with a cave recess and a monastery chapel which has well-preserved frescoes.
