70 kilometres to the west of Alesund lies the tiny island of Runde, home to 150 people and 500,000 birds of 230 species during nesting season between February and August each year. During summers, the Wildlife Sea Safari takes visitors on a 2 hour ride aboard a high-speed RIB-boat along the coast to observe seal colonies, puffins, and also great skuas, gannets and shags. Diving, hiking and fishing are also popular, and if you are lucky, you may find an 18thcentury gold coin from the wrecked Dutch ship Akerendam.
