The Aalesunds Museum in the heart of the town traces the history of Ålesund through artifacts, photographs and paintings. From Stone Age archaeological finds through a town model from 1898 and World War II artifacts including illegal newspapers, it highlights the main events that have defined the journey of the town from a fishing village to modern port. It delved into the details of the disastrous fire of 1904 which ravaged the settlement, and subsequent redevelopment in Jugendstil style that transformed it into the beautiful town it is today. It explores the area's commercial development through exhibits on sealing, fishing, shipping and industry in the Sunnmøre region. There is also a collection of boats and ships, including the Uræd lifeboat that you can enter.
