Located on the site of the important medieval trading post of Borgundkaupangen, the Sunnmøre Museum is an open air museum with a collection of 55 well-preserved traditional buildings and 40 historic boats.
Spanning from the Middle Ages to the early 20thcentury, the buildings showcase the evolution of architectural styles and domestic lifestyle in Norway. See the transition in design from the Follestad House - a west-Norwegian 14th - 15th century farmhouse, to the Dyb House from Buholmen which presents the style of houses from the turn of the 20thcentury which got destroyed in the fire of 1904.
The collection of historic boats sheds light on the seafaring tradition of Alesund, showcasing traditional sunnmørstypen and møringstypen types. It has a replica of the Kvalsund roskip (690 AD), the oldest ship found in Norway; Fjørtoft boat from Marsteinneset believed to be from the same period; Viking ship Borgundknarren; and Shetland winter-fishing boat M/K Heland.
The Medieval Museum showcases archaeological finds from Borgundkaupangen site which throw light on the life and culture of west Norwegian coastal settlements.
Tickets are NOK 80 for adults, NOK 40 for children, and NOK 60 for senior citizens and students.
