Spread over 60 hectares in north-east Nagoya, the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens offers a myriad of things to see and do. The Zoo is home to over 500 species of animals from different continents – Sumatran tigers, Somali wild asses, Indian rhinos, American bisons, koalas, California sea lions, polar bears, Malayan tapir, red kangaroo, and pygmy hippos can be seen here. Of note is the Medaka World aquarium displaying tropical fish commonly found in paddy fields that also flew on the space shuttle with a Japanese astronaut. The Botanical Gardens have over 7000 varieties on display across the various specialized gardens and Japan's oldest glasshouse. The complex includes a Sky Tower with observation decks and restaurants, a gassho-style home typical of snow-laden Japanese villages, ponds, playground, Tokai Model Forest, Gate of Samurai Residence and a Sky View Train.
