Built in 1904 to house the ashes of the Buddha which were gifted by the King of Thailand, the Nittai-ji is the only temple in Japan that does not belong to any specific sect of Buddhism. The Buddha’s remains are enshrined in a 15 metre high Gandhara style granite pagoda. The main temple of the complex is the Dharma Hall, with an image of the Tathagata Buddha and a tablet inscribed in gold leaf in the Thai script written by the King himself. The complex also had a reliquary hall, incense hall, tea ceremony room, Phoenix hall, spirits hall, a statue of King Chulalongkorn, and a cemetery where Japanese illuminaries are buried.
