The Staglands Wildlife Reserve lies 51 kilometres to the north-east of Wellington in the Akatarawa Valley, surrounded by lush forested land. The man-made ecosystem of streams, ponds, hills and gullies is home to a wide range of native and exotic birds and animals, such falcon, kune kune pigs, whio, guinea pigs, rabbits, eel, rainbow trout and fallow deer to name a few. There is also a Secret Garden and Old Bush Settlement - a recreation of an abandoned settlement. It is a great picnic spot in the middle of nature, away from the bustle of the city.
