Dating between 3600 BC and 2500 BC, the Tarxien Temples site is an archaeological complex of 4 megalithic structures that count amongst the earliest free-standing stone buildings in the world. Remarkable for their sophisticated art and architecture as well as construction techniques, the temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Excavated finds of a flint blade, long bone spatula, animal bones, and seashells within a carved altar indicate it was a site for animal sacrifice that was reused in the Bronze Age as a cremation cemetery. While several of the reliefs can be seen in-situ, some of the archaeological finds are on display at the National Museum of Archaeology.
