Concealed 400 feet under the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Lascaris War Rooms are a subterranean complex of tunnels and chambers that housed the British War Headquarters in Malta during World War II, then the Headquarters of the Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet which was active during the Suez Crisis of 1956, and later a NATO Communication Centre from 1967 to 1977.
Defensive and offensive operations were coordinated from the chambers here, which are now open to visitors as a museum. Explore the historic site which had communication channels with all radar traffic, and see the war rooms and NATO Command Centre. It is part of the Military Heritage Park, which includes the SS Peter and Paul Counterguard, the Saluting Battery, and the crypt of the former Garrison Chapel.
