The Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni is a Neolithic subterranean structure that is believed to have been a necropolis and sanctuary. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being the only known European example of a subterranean labyrinth from the prehistoric era. Dating to the Saflieni phase (3300-3000 BC) in Maltese prehistory, the Hypogeum was dug out in the coralline limestone by using Cyclopean rigging to lift huge blocks. The underground structure has 3 superimposed levels, with the uppermost being the earliest. Its architecture resembles the style of its contemporary above-ground megalithic temples, and the complex was found to have the remains of over 7000 individuals. Pottery, beads, amulets, figurines, shell buttons, and stone carved animals have been discovered in these chambers.

To preserve the 3000 year old site in good condition, entry is restricted to 10 persons per hour for 8 hours a day. Prior reservation is highly recommended to ensure your visit to one of the most fascinating historic sites in Malta.
