Albufera de Valencia, Valencia

The Albufera de Valencia on the Gulf of Valencia coast is the largest fresh water lagoon in Spain, and the highlight of the Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València.

The Albufera de Valencia on the Gulf of Valencia coast is the largest fresh water lagoon in Spain, and the highlight of the Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València. Separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow sand bar, it was originally a saltwater lagoon but has been transformed into freshwater by canals and irrigation drainage into the estuary. There are 6 small islands in the lake - the Mata del Fang, Mateta de Baix, Mata de la Barra, L'Antina, Mata de San Roc and Mata del Rey. The unique ecosystem of the lake and surrounding wetlands is rich in flora and fauna, with several birds such as herons, martins, and finches found in large numbers. It has acres of rice paddies, as well as a pine forest. Take a boat ride on the lake from any pier in El Palmar, and enjoy the beautiful sunset views over the water.

The El Saler Motorway connects Valencia to Albufera that lies 20 kms to the south. There are regular buses that ply the route. You can even choose to drive or bike down there.
