Standing tall on the tip of the promontory of Grignano, the Miramare Castle was built in 1856-'60by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Hapsburg as a sea-facing residence. The Neo-Gothic white castle has 22 hectares of landscaped park with an English and Italian-style garden, sculptures, ponds, and tropical flora.

The castle has been preserved in its original décor by Franz Hoffman, featuring luxurious period furniture and elegant art work. The ground floor has the bedroom and the archduke’s office, replicating the cabin and the stern wardroom respectively of the frigate Novara war-ship. The first floor has the guest reception areas, the Throne Room, and a room decorated with paintings depicting events in the life of Maximilian and the history of Miramare. The complex has a castelletto which was used as a temporary residence.
