Originally a deep mining well that was later abandoned, the Foiba di Basovizza was where the corpses of Italians killed by Yugoslav Partisans were thrown during and after World War II.

Located in the north-eastern part of the Karst plateau at 377 meters above sea level, the Basovizza Foiba is a national monument with a memorial to all victims of the massacre.
