Civico Museo della Risiera di San Sabba, Trieste

Originally built in 1898 as a rice husking plant in the San Sabba district on the outskirts of Trieste, the complex was transformed into a concentration camp during World War II.

Originally built in 1898 as a rice husking plant in the San Sabba district on the outskirts of Trieste, the complex was transformed into a concentration camp during World War II. Detainees at the Polizeihaftlager were mostly sent to Germany or Poland, but about 3500 were killed at the site itself. Moving personal messages engraved on the walls of the building are a testament to the Nazi atrocities. After the war, it was used to receive refugees from the Julian-Dalmatian exodus, and declared as a national monument. The museum showcases the "cell of death" where prisoners were detained, tortured and cremated, and the 4-storey building where Jews and other prisoners were held in large dormitories for deportation to Dachau, Auschwitz, and Mauthausen.
