Castello di San Giusto, Trieste

Built in the 15th century after Trieste was ravaged by Austrian attacks, the Castello di San Giusto stands on the site of a previous Roman fort.

Built in the 15th century after Trieste was ravaged by Austrian attacks, the Castello di San Giusto stands on the site of a previous Roman fort. It was expanded in the 17th century by Venetians, but fell into disuse after French bombardment in 1702. It was restored in the 21st century as a historic residence, with the Bastione Lalio showcasing Lapidario Tergestino collection of inscriptions, sculptures, bas-reliefs and Roman architectural fragments from the Orto Lapidario Garden.

The entrance to the castle displays the coat-of-arms of the patrician families of Trieste. The structure has various historical inscriptions and commemorative plaques, as well as rooms such as the Weapons Museum and Sala Caprin which display artifacts. A stairway leads to the panoramic terrace, from where visitors can get views of the courtyard which hosts cultural and entertainment events. The courtyard has the Micheze and Jacheze automaton from the bell tower. The terraces surrounding the courtyard offer spectacular views of the city. The tunnels under the castle are closed to the public, but the cellar has a restaurant.

Take bus 24 from Stazione Centrale to get to the castle.
