The beautiful landscapes of the Karst Plateau near the Slovenian border make it great for a day trip from Trieste. The Karst region, famous for its limestone caves, lies between the Vipava Valley, the westernmost part of the Brkini Hills, northern Istria, and the Gulf of Trieste. Grotta Gigante, the largest cave on display, is just 10 kms to the north of Trieste. There are several masonry lookout points near Trieste – Vedetta di Crogole and Vedetta di Mocco on the Rosandra Valley, Vedettas Alice, Italy, Liburnia, Slataper, and Tiziana Weiss on the ridge.
