The Monastery of Sao Bento traces its origins back to the 16th century, though the current Norman-Byzantine church was completed in 1922 by German architect Richard Berndl. The German clock on the façade is said to be the most precise time-piece in Sao Paulo. The Beuronense interiors, done by Dutch Benedictine monk Dom Adelbert Gresnich, feature large murals and 17th century images of St Benedict and St Scholastica designed by Frei Agostinho de Jesus. The church is also noted for its 6000 pipe German organ, with 4 manual keyboards and 77 records that is played during the Sunday mass along with Gregorian chants. The bakery attached to the Abbey sells breads, cakes, cookies and jams made by the monks.
