The imposing Osaka Castle is a 16thcentury masterpiece built on the site of the former Hongan-ji Temple by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and restored in the 1620s by Tokugawa Hidetada.

The imposing Osaka Castle is a 16thcentury masterpiece built on the site of the former Hongan-ji Temple by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and restored in the 1620s by Tokugawa Hidetada. The iconic 9-storied main donjon has a white façade with green gabled roofs, topped with large golden sea creature ornaments. Reconstructed in 1931, it is equipped with modern fittings. The Castle Museum displays artifacts from the Azuchi-Momoyama period related to the history of the complex, with dioramas depicting scenes from the life of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. The 8th floor is the observation deck, offering panoramic views of the Castle Park and mountains in the distance. The complex has several other structures including secondary citadels, gates, turrets, stone walls and moats. The massive stone wall is built from over 500,000 interlocking granite boulders sourced from daimyo all over Japan. The Nishinomaru Garden to the west has lawns with 600 cherry blossom trees, a tea house, and the former Osaka Guest House. To the east, between the inner and outer moats is a plum grove, beyond which is a baseball field.
