One of Japan's oldest temples, the Shitenno-ji was built in 593 by Prince Shotoku who was instrumental in the adoption of Buddhism in the country.

One of Japan's oldest temples, the Shitenno-ji was built in 593 by Prince Shotoku who was instrumental in the adoption of Buddhism in the country. The gate, five-storied pagoda, Kando (golden pavilion), and Kodo (Lecture Hall) under a covered corridor are laid out from south to north in one of the oldest architectural styles in Japan. Near the temple is the Gokuraku-jodo Garden, laid out as the paradise gardens of Buddhist philosophy.
