Shinsekai in downtown Osaka may be known today for its cheap eateries and sleazy nightlife, but it sure does offer a glimpse of its vibrant past when it was a bustling urban area with entertainment and amusement venues. Developed in 1912 with a western outlook, its northern half was modeled after Paris, while its southern half was inspired by New York. At its centre is the 103 metre tall Tsutenkaku Tower, with an observation deck at 91 metres. While in the area, do sample the local delicacy Kushi-katsu, comprising skewered, battered and deep-fried items that include meat, fish, vegetables, fruits and even ice-cream.
