The National Museum of Art in Osaka explores the 'relationship between developments in Japanese art and art from the rest of the world'. The underground museum is housed in a stunning modern building by Cesar Pelli on Nakanoshima Island, where the externally visible structure of titanium-coated stainless steel and glass resembles reeds along a riverbank or stalks of bamboo, representing growth. The collection has over 6000 works of painting, prints, watercolors, sketches and photographs, mostly from the post-war era, with some pre-war works by Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Tsuguharu Foujita and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. The atrium displays works by Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, and Suda Yoshihiro.
