Choirokoitia is a well-preserved archaeological site on the foothills of the Troodos massif in the Maroni River valley that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its role in highlighting the 'transmission of culture from the Near East to the European world', and providing data 'relating to the spread of civilization from Asia to the Mediterranean world'. The excavations provide insights into the Neolithic age settlement that thrived here in the 7th to 4th millennium BC. Enclosed by a wall, the village had a well-developed architectural system with circular mud buildings. Excavated items include flint tools, bone tools, stone vessels, figurines, pottery, funerary objects and picrolite jewelry.
