Larnaca Medieval Castle, Larnaca

Located at the southern end of the Foinikoudes Avenue, the Larnaca Castle traces its origins to the 12th century.

Located at the southern end of the Foinikoudes Avenue, the Larnaca Castle traces its origins to the 12th century. It was upgraded to its present form at the end of the 14th century, when Larnaca became a major port for the Kingdom of Cyprus. It continued to be used by the Ottomans, and then the British who used it as a prison. The western chamber of the ground floor in the east was used for the execution of prisoners. The Greek Cypriots used the castle as a prison again during the Cypriot civil war. The castle today houses a museum, showcasing Cypriot cultural heritage. On display are antiquities from Early Christian, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine monuments of Cyprus (4th-16th centuries), photographs of Byzantine wall-paintings from 11th-16th centuries, medieval glazed pottery (Sgraffito), and helmets and swords. The castle courtyard, which has a collection of medieval cannons, is now used as an amphitheatre. The fort offers good views of the sea.
