Perched atop a 750 metre high rocky mountain in the Troodos range, the Stavrovouni Monastery was founded in 328 AD by St Helena to house the relic of the Holy Cross which she brought from Jerusalem. Lost over the years, only a piece of the original Cross remains, embedded in a silver Cross. Other relics housed here include the Cross of the Good Thief, a nail, and a part of the rope that had bound Jesus to the Cross. The church has been restored, with frescoes and icons painted by Fr. Kallinikos. Women are not allowed to enter the monastery, which is one of the oldest and most important Christian monasteries in the world.
