Set in the midst of green forests on the Königstuhl hillside, the red sandstone ruins of the Heidelberg Castle are counted among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. First mentioned in 1225, it was the residence of Prince Electors before it got destroyed and partially rebuilt several times over the centuries.

To reach the Schloss, take the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular railway that runs from Heidelberg's Kornmarkt to the summit of the Königstuhl, and get down midway. Highlights of the castle are -

  • The 18th century Heidelberg Tun in the Gassbau, referred to as the 'World’s Largest Wine Barrel, is 7 meters high and 8.5 meters wide, with a capacity of 220,000 litres,
  • The ruins of the Hortus Palatinate - 17th century Baroque Renaissance gardens by architect Salomon de Caus,
  • The Deutsches Apothekenmuseum (German Pharmacy Museum) in the Ottheinrichsbau traces the history of pharmacy, and
  • The restored Friedrichsbau with plasterwork ceilings and stone figurines by master sculptor Sebastian Götz.
