Built over 146 years from 1398 to 1544, the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit on Marktplatz is the most famous church in Heidelberg. The Baroque spire was built in 1709 after the church was torched during the War of the Palatine Succession. It has remains of the tombs and epitaphs of the Palatinate electors, as well as a collection of manuscripts from the Bibliotheca Palatina.
