Abutting the south bank of the Neckar River, the Heidelberg Altstadt traces its founding back to the 13th century during the House of Wittelsbach. Expanded in the 14th century, it was lined with pretty fachwerk houses, which were destroyed in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and the Palatinate War of Succession (1688-1697). Heidelberg emerged relatively unscathed during World War II, so the Altstadt retained its historic 18th century Baroque buildings. Explore the area from the riverside to the Königstuhl below the Schloss, and discover beautiful old buildings such as the Town Hall, Heiliggeistkirche, Providenskirche, Peterskirche, Jesuitenkirche, Old University and Heuscheuer. Hauptstrasse is the major shopping avenue in the city, running from Bismarckplatz to Karlstor, passing through the historical squares of Marktplatz and Kornmarkt.
