The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is a historical landmark with a rich, storied past that is evident in its architectural details which have Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is a historical landmark with a rich, storied past that is evident in its architectural details which have Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the 'Historic Centre of Cordoba', as it is 'a living expression of the different cultures that have existed there'. Tracing its origins back to the 7th century when the Roman temple on the site was converted to the Visigothic Church of Saint Vincent of Lérins, it was partitioned into Muslim and Christian sections after the Moors invaded Spain in 711 AD and became completely Islamic in 784 when the Emir bought out the Christian part. It reverted to its Christian roots when Cordoba was captured by Castilian forces in 1236 during the Reconquista, and has been a church ever since.

The edifice has a large hypostyle prayer hall with 856 columns with horse-shoe shaped red and white striped arches, and an ornate golden mihrab (prayer niche) with vegetal motifs and calligraphy. The mihrab is topped by a dome made from a single marble slab with ribbed vaulting and beautiful mosaics. The arcaded courtyard has a fountain in the middle, while the northwest corner of the complex has a tapering 93 metre tall Renaissance bell-tower, the Torre de Alminar, which was built over the minaret constructed when it was a mosque. The Patio de los Naranjos (Courtyard of Orange Trees) offers a spot for resting in the shade.
